A one-day Professional Development Session presented by Ontario Presents at Ontario Contact

St. Catharines, ON - Wednesday, Sept 12, 2018

Whether you are a new artist or a seasoned touring artist, this session is for you. If you are looking to market yourself in Canada or the United States, you will learn about all aspects of marketing, have a chance to hear from marketing professionals, and participate in roundtable discussion groups geared to your particular needs and experience/touring level.

9:00-9:15 Introducing Yourself

A brief show and tell for all participants: who you are, where you come from, why you’re here, questions you’d like to have answered and one secret you’d like to share with the group!

9:15-9:30 a.m. Robert and Marcus Introduce and Update

We’re focusing on marketing today and we will present an overview of what to expect and how to get the most out of today, as well as changes to performing arts post Donald Trump.

9:30-10:30 a.m. Marketing for Artists

Two presenters who market artists as part of their workload, advise everyone on the Artists’ Marketing Toolkit – what you need to have, how you need to have it, how to use if effectively.

10:30-10:45 COFFEE BREAK & Conversation

10:45-12:15 Secrets of Showcasing

PANEL:  A panel of experts will share never-before revealed secrets about successful showcasing: how to decide where to showcase, how to apply, how to achieve success, etc.

12:15-1:30 p.m. LUNCH (Provided) & Conversation (optional)

1:30-2:45 p.m. Everything you Need to Know About Contracts But Were Afraid to Ask

Robyn Guilliams of G&G Arts Law in New York brings her vast knowledge and experience to this session to provide a primer on contracts in the performing arts field. Robyn will provide the essentials you need to know about contracting.

2:45-3:00 p.m. Coffee & Conversation

3:00-4:00

Artist and Presenter Pitches

Everyone attending will be given 3 minutes to make a pitch to introduce themselves, why they are who they are and what they would like done to make their life better.

4:00-4:30 Final Questions and Summary in Round Table Format

Facilitator Bios:

Robert Baird

Robert Baird is President of BAM! Baird Artists Management Consulting in Toronto, offering performing arts consulting advice to artists, agents, managers and venues. He is former President of NAPAMA (North American Performing Arts Managers and Agents), served for many years on the Executive Board of Festivals and Events Ontario (FEO), and is a former Vice-President of that organization. Mr. Baird currently serves on the Board of OAPN (Ohio Arts Presenters Network) and as APAP (Association of Performing Arts Presenters) Showcase Coordinator. Mr. Baird has a monthly column on “Crossing Borders” in International Musician: The Official Journal of the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada.

Marcus Lundgren

Marcus Lundgren HeadshotMarcus is the Artistic Director of the “nearly world-famous” DuffleBag Theatre, an interactive touring theatre company for young audiences that adapts fairy tales-starring members of the audience in the main roles.  Since 1992, he has been touring to theatres and schools across Canada, the U.S., and internationally to places like Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Brunei.  He is also in his 15th season as director of the Lighthouse Festival Theatre Young Company in Port Dover.

Robyn Guilliams

Robyn Guilliams HeadshotRobyn is a partner in Goldstein & Guilliams PLLC, where her work concentrates on providing legal, consultation, and management services to clients in the fields of entertainment and the performing arts.

Regarded as one of the leading experts on U.S. tax issues for foreign artists, Robyn authored the tax section of www.artistsfromabroad.org, the most highly regarded and authoritative on-line resource for visa and tax issues for foreign artists and arts professionals who wish to perform in the United States. She is also a contributor to the blogs Law and Disorder: Performing Arts Unit on MusicalAmerica.com and Avoiding a World of Trouble on HelloStage.com. 

In addition to her law degree, Robyn holds a Bachelor of Music Theory from the University of Louisville.  She has an extensive background in arts management and administration, with a professional career that has included positions with the League of American Orchestras, the William Morris Agency, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where she served as Artistic Administrator for the National Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to her legal practice, Robyn also serves as Managing Director of Goldstein Guilliams International LLC
